Assisi welcomes Man in Motion

Canada’s Man in Motion, Rick Hansen, brought his inspirational message to St. Francis of Assisi elementary school on Sept. 15. Hansen, who will soon celebrate the 25th anniversary of embarking on a 35-country, four-continent wheelchair tour to raise money for spinal cord research, was invited by the school community and the Moeller family after Karl Moeller, a Grade 4 student, was paralyzed in a motor vehicle accident. The school has raised $70,000 for a lift-equipped bus and building modifications so Karl can return to class. See next week's B.C. Catholic for the full story and pictures.

Farewell, Archbishop Ventura

Church news junkies will be interested in learning that the papal nuncio to Canada, Archbishop Luigi Ventura, is leaving us. The Vatican has announced that Archbishop Ventura, the Pope's ambassador to Canada, will become the new nuncio to France. What better person to comment on the news than our own man in Ottawa, Archbishop Terry Prendergast. Here's his take on the announcement:

70 years ago today in The B.C. Catholic...

The invasion of Poland on September 1, 1939 marked the beginning of World War II. Before the war, Pope Pius made appeals for peace and urged continued prayers "saying he could not find it in his heart to abandon hope for peace."

The Pope's appeal for peace was published in the September 2, 1939 issue of The B.C. Catholic (“Vicar of ‘Prince of Peace’ Broadcasts Peace Plea”):
