Australia's same-sex marriage law struck down

Ruling means couples' contracts now invalid

Last month, an Australian High Court overturned legislation allowing gay marriage in the Australian Capital Territory (ACT), which includes the country's capital, Canberra.

The territory's parliament passed a bill in Oct. 2013 making the ACT the first part of Australia to legalize so-called same-sex marriage.

Twenty-seven couples who married since the law came into effect will now have their unions declared invalid.
