Church celebrates Vancouver's 125th birthday

Along with the rest of the city, the Archdiocese of Vancouver is celebrating the City of Vancouver's 125th birthday with a special page on its website commemorating this day and looking back at the development of the Church in the region.

When Vancouver was incorporated April 6, 1886, there was already a long history of the Catholic Church in the area.

Bishop Louis-Joseph D’Herbomez, OMI, was made the first bishop of the Vicariate Apostolic of British Columbia in 1864. The Archdiocese of Vancouver did not exist until 1908 when, under Archbishop Augustine Dontenwill, it was raised from the Diocese of New Westminster to an archdiocese.

The city is marking this momentous occasion with a number of events and celebrations.
